Kathmandu : Major opposition Nepali Congress has demanded a common interpretation of the 11-point agreement reached between the government and coordinator of autonomous Madhes alliance, CK Raut.
Organizing a press conference on Wednesday, the NC said although the first point of the agreement was a welcome deed as it brought the secessionist group into consensus, the second point has contradicted to the first one. The second point has given State legitimacy to the yearning for disintegration via democratic process, the party accused.
The second point of the agreement therefore must be interpreted in a common way, said Spokesperson Bishwo Prakash Sharma, arguing that a common interpretation of ‘democratic process based on people’s mandate’ means referendum. It needs correction or both sides come up with common understanding and interpretation, he demanded.
At a time when five days have already spent as CK Raut describing that the government was ready for the referendum and he even attended a programme in Janakpur along with a rally hoisting the banner of autonomous Madhes three days back, minimal response from the government to it has deepened mystery.
The Nepali Congress, as the Spokesperson said, was of the stand that amendment of constitution was the right way to address the grudges in Tarai/Madhes, but the government-CK Raut agreement failed to mention it. Honest and practical approach with revision of the agreement or the common interpretation would help keep intact the territorial integrity and national unity.
Making aware both government and the autonomous Madhes alliance, the Nepali Congress reiterated that the national integrity and unity is the common will of the Tarai/Madhes, and any activity against these are condemnable.
