Govt indifferent to protecting Dr KC’s life: NMA

Kathmandu, July 18 : Nepal Medical Association has accused the government of showing indifference to save the life of agitating Dr Govinda KC. Dr KC has been staging a hunger strike in Jumla for the past 19 days.

The NMA has argued that no responsibility was shown from any side even though the NMA called on the Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister and the Health and Education Ministers and made them aware about Dr KC’s condition.
It is worrying that government has failed to take concrete move to address the legitimate demands of Dr KC, the NMA said, wondering why the fundamental rights of health enshrined in the constitution was not implemented.
NMA Chairman Dr Muktiram Shrestha said they would now resort to any step if no concrete measures were taken for saving Dr KC’s life.
Similarly, General Secretary of the Association Dr Lochan Karki informed that NMA has called all government and private hospitals, nursing homes, clinic and health facilities to close down the health services except the emergency one from Thursday.
“It is done in a bid to reach the voice of doctors and health workers from across the country to the government,” he argued.
Moreover, if it also goes unheard, NMA would shutdown all health services for indefinite period, according to him.
The NMA has demanded the withdrawal of the current medical education bill and the proper measure for meaningful talks to save Dr KC’s life.
Meanwhile, the Rastriya Janata Party (RJP) had drawn the attention of the government to address the just demands of Dr KC. Issuing a statement here today, RJP presidium Chair Mahantha Thakur has urged the government to become serious to save the life of Dr KC. “It may not be necessary to agree to all the demands of Dr KC but it is the primary duty of the government to respect the people’s right to life and the satyagraha”, reads the statement.
