Acharya elected NTUC president

Kathmandu, June 16 : Pushkar Acharya has been elected the president of Nepal Trade Union Congress (NTUC).
As per the results of the elections held for the new leadership during the NTUC’s 6th general conference, Acharya clinched 818 votes and his closest contender Khilanath Dahal bagged 533 votes, election officer Gopal Krishna Ghimire said. Dahal is the outgoing president of the NTUC.
Similarly, Mahendra Prasad Yadav has been elected the senior vice-president, Tejendra Jung Karki and Ajaya Kumar Rai the vice-presidents (open category), Indira Sapkota vice-president (women), Netra Bikram Thapa vice-president (representing the service sector trade unions), Llait Shrestha the vice-president (representing the production sector), Asha Singh Rathour vice-president (representing the informal sector) and Yogendra Kumar Kunwar has been elected the general secretary.
Likewise, Ganesh Bahadur KC, Jyoti Koirala, Radhika Kuinkel, Sitaram Awasthi, Rajesh Palikhe and Ishwar Babu Pariyar have been elected as the deputy general secretaries under the open, women, service sector, informal sector, production sector respectively. Mohan Kumar Basnet was elected the treasurer and Sushila Ghimire the joint-treasurer.
The general convention also elected 27 central members. There were two panels each led by Dahal and Acharya in the election fray. Acharya’s panel clean swept the election except one member. Out of the 1,420 registered voters, 1398 voted in the election, according to the election committee member, Arun Poudel.
Talking to RSS, newly-elected president Acharya said his focus would be on enhancing the economic strength of labourers, increasing their accessibility to opportunities, increasing the NTUC’s credibility and moving ahead towards building an equitable society.
The NTUC is the trade union wing of the Nepali Congress.
