Bhaktapur’s active journalists demand more security

Bhaktapur : The active journalists based in Bhaktapur have demanded security assurance citing the increasing challenges they face in course of covering news stories.

The journalists demanded security assurance during an interaction on ‘Journalists and Security’ organized by Informal Sector Service Centre (INSEC), Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) Bhaktapur Chapter and the Active Journalists Forum, Bhaktapur on Tuesday.

The working journalists complained that reporting was as difficult as during the insurgency period due to a range of threats issued against them.

At the programme, FNJ Bhaktapur Chapter President, Puskar Budhathoki, spoke of the growth in the trend of issuing threats to journalists. He stressed on need to create an environment to allow the scribes to carry on their professional duty in a secured manner.

Active Journalist Forum Chairman, Ramesh Giri, said the concerned media house, FNJ, local administration and the government must make arrangements for journalists’ security when being informed of the physical attacks and threats.

Press Chautari Bhaktapur Chairman, Som Sharma, said the FNJ must not hide the incidents of physical attacks and threats to journalists. He called on the journalists’ umbrella organization to not limit itself to just issuing statements, but take steps for legal action.
