Kathmandu : Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has been elected new Prime Minister today. It is his fourth prime ministerial stint.
PM Deuba was born on 13 June 1946 in Dadelhura district. Currently a resident of Chappali, Budhanilakantha, Kathmandu, PM Deuba originally hails from Ruwakhola, of Dadeldhura in the far western region of the country.
He was elected the President of the biggest party Nepali Congress on 7 March 2016.
His first prime ministerial stint was from September 1995 to March to 1997 while the second from August 2001 to October 2002, the third from June 2004 June to February 2005. He was relieved from the post by then King Gyanendra Shah reasoning his incompetence in February 2005.
He began his political career being the Chairman of the Far-Western Students Committee. Similarly, became founder member and President of the Nepal Students Union since 1971 to 1980. He was active in promoting multi-party democracy in Nepal during the National referendum in 1980. He was the Police In Charge of Nepali Congress in the Far Western region in 1991.
When the intraparty conflict became intense, he formed a separate Nepali Congress Democratic party being its President from September 2002 to January 2006. In May 2006, he was unanimously re-elected President of the Nepali Congress Democratic.
He served as the Head of the high Level Recommendation Committee for the Resolution of Maoist Problem from December 1999 to October 2000. He became the Vice-President of the Socialist International from June 2008 to 2012.
He was the leader of the Parliamentary Committee of the Party May 2006 to September 2007.
PM Deuba served as Minister for Home Affairs in the government led by Nepali Congress from December 1991 to September 1994. He was elected Member of Parliament from the Nepali Congress from Dadeldhura District of Far-West Nepal from 1991 to November 1994.
PM Deuba was imprisoned for political beliefs for ten years at different time from 1966 to 2005. He is married to Arzu Rana and is a father of a son.
