Poverty, ignorance causes of human trafficking: Attorney General

Kathmandu, Dec 7 : Attorney General Agni Prasad Kharel has said poverty, ignorance and lack of education remain as major causes of human trafficking in and from Nepal.

In his address to a programme organised by the Maiti Nepal on the issue of gender-based violence and abuse, the Attorney General said attorneys across the country had been directed to work seriously from the effective enforcement of laws so as to prevent human trafficking.
As he said, monetary influence and threats made victims compelled to withdraw cases and the court should seriously respond to cases related to human trafficking.
[False] promises for good job has been used as one of the tricks by perpetrators to persuade potential victims of human trafficking, as shared by advocate Anita Thapa at the programmme.
Maiti Nepal’s acting chair Bishwaram Khadka highlighted the need of increasing public awareness about people’s rights.
